Far Moor Bridleway Bridge Nr Horton In Ribblesdale (By john768)

Far Moor Bridleway Bridge Near Horton In Ribblesdale North Yorkshire.

A new bridge was required at Far Moor Nr Horton in Ribblesdale to carry pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders over the River Ribble on the 350 mile Pennine Bridleway National Trail.

Measuring 53x2.5m, the Far Moor bridleway bridge is the largest example of a stress laminated construction in the world.

The beautiful, but extremely remote rural setting influenced the choice of bridge type. Access for heavy machinery or cranes to the site was not possible so it was agreed the bridge should be made using stress laminated construction.

It was essential that the bridge was sympathetic to the surrounding environment.
The bridge was constructed in 8 weeks weeks, inspite of the remote location. The large spans were formed from short lengths of timber that were carried by hand and lifted into position.

The all timber construction blends in well with the natural surroundings and because the structure used only small timber pieces they were sourced by the Forestry Commission from forests within the United Kingdom.

Horton Quarry is a limestone quarry near to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire, England. The quarry, which is some 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Settle, has been operating since at least 1889, and produces limestone for a variety of purposes. Stone used to be exported from the quarry by rail, but now leaves by lorry, although there are plans to re-instate the railway sidings. The quarry used to produce its own lime by roasting the limestone in big kilns on the site, but the last of these were removed in the 1980s. Since 2000, the quarry has been owned and operated by Hanson.
In 2021, 660 tons of stone from the quarry was used to re-line the path up to the summit of Ingleborough. The path had become worn with use, and the company donated the stone.

Southrey Church (By john768)

The little church of St John the Divine at Southrey in Lincolnshire is far from being a typical English country church, more like something that has been transported from New England.

Built by the parishioners and a local carpenter Richard Turner in 1898 at a cost of about £130 as a temporary structure, and is not subject to Faculty. The neat little gabled and belfry timber building was covered in PVC to protect the original wood. The church rests on a concrete plinth incorporating stones from the nearby ruins of Bardney Abbey. Maintenance has recently included redecorating in white and sky blue along with recarpeting.

The church now boasts a wonderful new five paned stained glass window to commemorate World War I and the sacrifice made by all the servicemen from the village during the last 100 years. A book has been compiled to show the lives of this men and their families and is available for purchase at the church. Memorials in the churchyard from that time have also been cleaned and restored.

The most recent addition to the church is a fully disabled access composting toilet and new storage facility, money raised for this amounted to £28,000. The church holds a service every week and the doors are open 365 days a year. Regular meetings of Knit and Natter for the residents takes place weekly long with children's workshops during the school holidays. Speakers evenings give another dimension to the village with talks from Bees to World War I Aviation and crafts from Chirstmas cake decoration to glass painting. All visitors are welcome to take pictures and sign the visitor’s book, which helps to enhance future projects for the upkeep of this site. The site is accessible to all. In 2016 the church was awarded the Lincolnshire Heritage Forum Best Volunteer Project for its stain glass window.

Wrawby Windmill (By john768)

Wrawby Postmill is a windmill at Wrawby near Brigg, in North Lincolnshire, England.
The mill is the last post mill in the north of England, and was built between 1760 and 1790 to serve the Elsham Hall estate. Originally it had four common sails, but through most of its working life had a more usual combination of two common and two spring sails, providing power with flexibility. It was working until the 1940s, when it had four spring sails, before becoming derelict. Following a possibility of demolition it was acquired and restored in 1965 by Wrawby Windmill Preservation Society. Maintenance work in 2008, which returned the mill to mixed sail types, was funded by the SPAB Mill Repairs Fund and local residents.
