Southrey Church added to Places of Worship in East Midlands by john768 on 12/01/2022

The little church of St John the Divine at Southrey in Lincolnshire is far from being a typical English country church, more like something that has been transported from New England.

Built by the parishioners and a local carpenter Richard Turner in 1898 at a cost of about £130 as a temporary structure, and is not subject to Faculty. The neat little gabled and belfry timber building was covered in PVC to protect the original wood. The church rests on a concrete plinth incorporating stones from the nearby ruins of Bardney Abbey. Maintenance has recently included redecorating in white and sky blue along with recarpeting.

The church now boasts a wonderful new five paned stained glass window to commemorate World War I and the sacrifice made by all the servicemen from the village during the last 100 years. A book has been compiled to show the lives of this men and their families and is available for purchase at the church. Memorials in the churchyard from that time have also been cleaned and restored.

The most recent addition to the church is a fully disabled access composting toilet and new storage facility, money raised for this amounted to £28,000. The church holds a service every week and the doors are open 365 days a year. Regular meetings of Knit and Natter for the residents takes place weekly long with children's workshops during the school holidays. Speakers evenings give another dimension to the village with talks from Bees to World War I Aviation and crafts from Chirstmas cake decoration to glass painting. All visitors are welcome to take pictures and sign the visitor’s book, which helps to enhance future projects for the upkeep of this site. The site is accessible to all. In 2016 the church was awarded the Lincolnshire Heritage Forum Best Volunteer Project for its stain glass window.

Ullapool is inside the Highlands TFR, so check whether it is active - on Sundays it is not, so we were able to fly.

MV Loch Seaforth was just about to dock, so I just had to send the AIR3 up and try to capture it - video to follow when we get home and can edit the footage...

Lots of scope for filming, the town itself, the harbour and boats, plus the amazing views both to the Summerisles and inland along Loch Broom...

Scampston Hall & Walled Garden, Ryedale (By D0c.Col)

Scampston Hall, near Malton in North Yorkshire, is a beautiful historic building in the midst of a huge parkland estate with wonderful gardens. It's one of Yorkshire’s most elegant country estates.

The story of the St Quintin family, and the late Georgian remodelling associated with architect Thomas Leverton is fascinating but be warned it is open on selected days only and filming inside the house is not possible.

The parkland is connected with the age of Capability Brown and Scampston’s celebrated Walled Garden, was redesigned by Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf. With its modern planting, grasses, perennials and seasonal structure, the garden gives this historic estate a striking contemporary chapter.

A typical Brown designed lake is a great feature and is certainly one of Yorkshires great historic houses to visit.

This is not a National Trust property, and I am unsure of their policy on drones. The family also are also in residence, therefore I would advise on discretion when it comes to TOAL. I found a couple of quiet spots to film from and waited until there was hardly anyone about during my payed entry visit.

The hall itself is a great example of late 18th century architecture and the interior tours are well worth the visit.

The Don Aqueduct (frequently called the Bramwith Aqueduct) is an impressive engineering feat carrying the New Junction Canal over the tidal River Don near Kirk Bramwith, Doncaster. It features unique guillotine-style gates that are lowered during floods to prevent excess water from entering the canal
