North of Hereford, Sutton Walls Hillfort began as a major Iron Age stronghold, later occupied into the Roman period. It is also tied to Saxon legend as the site where King Æthelberht of East Anglia was murdered by King Offa of Mercia in AD 794—an act of political betrayal that marked its shift from tribal centre to royal residence.

These images reveal key phases of the site’s history. The deep hollows visible are the result of 20th-century gravel extraction. While destructive, this work exposed evidence of mass burials—likely Iron Age warriors killed during a Roman assault.

You can clearly see the surviving ramparts, whose steep banks rise sharply from the flat Herefordshire plain. These defences once included a deep V-shaped ditch and timber palisade, making the fort highly defensible and visually imposing.

Today, Sutton Walls appears as a green plateau surrounded by farmland, yet it still retains the commanding presence of a former Mercian power centre.

One of the most striking discoveries came from in the late 1940s. At the western entrance, archaeologists uncovered a mass burial of around 24 young men. The bodies had been thrown into the defensive ditch, many showing signs of extreme violence—decapitation, sword wounds, and injuries from behind, suggesting execution. Dating evidence places this in the mid-1st century AD, during the Roman advance into the Welsh Marches. The findings indicate the fort was violently taken rather than surrendered, with defenders killed at the gate and discarded in the ditch.

The undisturbed western ramparts likely mark the site of this final conflict, capturing a moment of brutal transition from native stronghold to Roman control.

Beautiful spot for flying and after a long research to make sure it's safe and legal I have decided to give it a go. There is so much more to see in this location including walking all the way up to the Ogmore Castle - and we went there before just without a drone and in another direction you will find a Dunraven Bay with a castle (or a footprint of the castle) I'm not too sure as we didn't get past the parking gate due to only cash accepted.
Parking is available and the earlier you arrive the better

Grosmont Station is a unique transport hub in North Yorkshire, England. It serves as the vital junction where the heritage North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) connects to the national rail network via the Esk Valley Line. It features a historic 1952-themed setup, active engine sheds, and the 1835 George Stephenson tunnel.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Operates daily from Easter through late October, providing steam and heritage diesel services between Grosmont, Goathland, and Pickering.

The station has a gift shop, Tea Room, accessible public toilets, and a nearby Pay and Display car park. Walking Trails: The 3.5-mile Rail Trail begins here, running along George Stephenson’s original railway line to Goathland and my TOAL was from this trail overlooking the station below.

Cotswold Lavender Farm, Tewkesbury (By fatbaldbloke)

Arial views of the Snowshill/Cotswold Lavender Farm. Saw the purple fields after leaving Broadway Tower and took the drone up to investigate. Went to the actual farm the day after to take some camera shots through the gates.

Sefton Park Cricket Club, lower pitch, Liverpool (By redhed17)

This is a great are to practice when you get a drone. There is an artificial grass area to take off from and land. The area is enclosed on three sides, and there is hardly anyone walking through the space. It is quite large area to fly around.
