Stanley Mills added to Historic Buildings in Scotland by DazC on 29/10/2024

Not to be confused with the footballer!!!
Looked after by Historic Environment Scotland, the mills were built on the banks of The River Tay in the 1780s before finally being closed in 1989. The nearby Stanley Village was built to house the workers. It's a great place to walk about with a handheld camera with loads of interesting stuff to keep the eyes and shutter button busy. A lot of the buildings now have been turned into private dwellings so please be mindful of privacy concerns. HES will try to stop TOAL from the land but there is an easy parking spot accross the river, I will add a marker for it. It is on farmland, but there is a public right of way all the way down so access here is not a problem. Just don't block the narrow path when parking as a lot of other people use it. At the marker furthest from river, turn into the farm, follow the track all the way down until you see the remains of Cambusmichael Church, this is where you park. Small gap in the trees 10 yards back the way will lead you down a steep banking, just follow the path, over two small bridges. When you see the Tay opening up, turn left. You can't miss it!!!

Multiple places to take off, I parked up in one of the car parks that I have marked and took a small walk up on to the grassed area. Not too many seagulls as they are probably all robbing ice creams off people in the high street, but beware.

St Andrews Churchyard, Lewes (By MikeZimbo)

Beautiful church, seems to be inactive at the time of flying. Great views of surrounding fields and a nearby pond.
I found it easy to park right next to the church on the public section of road, do note there is a private residence at the back of the church and the where the road splits, leading to the left indicates private,

Renfrew Bridge (By JoeC)

The Clyde's newest (at the time of posting) bridge links Renfrew and Yoker. It opened on May 9th, 2025.

It is very much in Glasgow Airport's FRZ, but I didn't have any difficulty getting permission via the NATS portal.

I parked in a nearby industrial estate, but if you can't park there expect a short (~10 minute) walk as most nearby roads are double-yellow lines.

Ampthill Camp Memorial Cross, Mid Bedfordshire (By BEATO)

The Ampthill Camp Memorial Cross, located in Ampthill Park, Bedfordshire honours the 10,600 men trained at the Bedfordshire Training Depot during World War I.

Commissioned by Herbrand Russell, 11th Duke of Bedford, it was unveiled in 1919 to commemorate the 707 soldiers who lost their lives. Designed by Cecil Greenwood Hare, the cross features a Crusader’s sword and solemn inscriptions.

Restored in 2012, it remains a poignant tribute to their sacrifice.

The park is beautiful and a fantastic place to learn to fly.

Dating from 1389 the ruins are in a poor state and don't imagine they will be there much longer. It is a bit of a trek across Betchworth golf course to get there put there is a public right of way.

Raven's Rock Gorge, Sutherland South (By AlbionDrones)

A beautiful forest of birch and fir, a babbling brook and a trail that leads to a picnic spot with a bear sculpture and 'Ent' trees standing sentinel... A quiet place that feels more wild than it is...

There used to be a circular walk of about 1 1/2 miles, but a landslip has meant it is now 2 shorter out and back walks, and the storms a few years ago have brought down several trees, giving it a very wild feel... Of the 2 walks, the lower one descends to the burn on a steep path, then follows it to the bear sculpture, the upper path takes you a viewpoint over the site.

Ideal for an AVATA flight, flying between the trees and low over the burn...

The one local we saw did warn us of the midges, they can be fierce here from June to September, so plenty of midge spray, and I would advise decent boots too..
