Epiacum Roman Fort added to Castles and Fortifications in North East by Shambleclown on 19/09/2020

Whitley Castle (Epiacum) is a large, unusually shaped Roman fort (Latin: castra) north-west of the town of Alston, Cumbria, England. The castrum, which was first built by the Roman Army early in the 2nd century AD, was partly demolished and rebuilt around 200 AD. It appears to have been sited to protect lead mining in the area as well as to support the border defences of Hadrian's Wall.

Unlike most Roman forts that have a "playing-card shape" (rectangular with rounded corners), Whitley Castle is lozenge-shaped to fit the site. Numerous banks and ditches ring the stone ramparts, making it among the most complex defensive earthworks of any fort known in the Roman Empire.

To gain access, which is free, visit the The Nook Farm Shop & Cafe which is on the A689. The landowners own the Shop and had no problem in allowing me to fly there. You do not really appreciate the size of the fort and ramparts until you get in the air. Planning on a future visit to do a map survey.

Land owner permission obtained.

Jo N Lees Café, Morecambe (By Doodler)

The café is part of what was a gym on the shore near Hest Bank, the rest of the place is (was?) Hydropaws. There's a car park but that's only open when the café's open however there's plenty of parking on the promenade close by. I've already added a spot nearby but this is worthy of it's own spot because it's a damned good café and you can sit on the edge of the car park wall just in front of it, handy if you're with someone and they're of the what-am-i-going-to-do-while-you-fly attitude.

Brougham Castle, Penrith (By CSB73)

With this being a EH site I waited until after closing time and took off from a quiet country lane layby. Just be mindful of any walkers/traffic using the lane. That said, I was in the air for over 20mins and no one passed by. You can get some stunning shots of the castle and river nearby.

Jones Pit - Edge of Kings Wood (By BritCanTravel)

Parked in a lay-by next to a farm gate, was there for around a total of one hour. Saw about 3 people and 1 vehicle.

Flight straight across field to the wind turbine with a quarry either side. Wish I’d have investigated more whilst flying but wind was picking up.

Edge of Kings Wood, which I think is a nature reserve but you can still see from this location when up.

Private farmland but no barns or working field around to ask full permission. TOAL is from public highway.
