Elsted Common added to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South East by AeroJ on 29/07/2024

Elsted Common (also called Iping /Trotton Common) is located just off the A272 towards Midhurst, just after the village of Trotton. Turning right onto the Elsted Rd we can either park in the car park for Iping Common (thieves hotspot / less rewarding views), or, more preferably, drive on down until the road sharply dog-legs right, at which point there is a layby on the left big enough for just 1 or 2 cars. Park there, cross the road (careful of blind corners etc) and head into the woods through the gate there into the Nature Reserve... note warnings about cows !! Try and locate those guys before you fly just so you know where they are !!

Then walk about 100 meters further where it opens out into beautiful heathland, and the whole 2 km area in front of you and to left and right are flyable land.

This whole area is an SSSI but all for ground-dwelling stuff (Nightjars, Stonechats, Ordonata, Sand Wasps, rare Heather etc etc) and we do have to watch out for roaming herds of Red Poll Cattle, which are curious and stealthy (also unphased by smaller drones helpfully !). But if we keep the ground based stuff to a minimum, there are very rewarding views at canopy height and above and a stunning water filled quarry lies behind the tree-line where you parked, visible from anywhere above 200 ft. Sometimes there are hawks, but the area they patrol is so vast here that they usually move off, so just wait for them !

This location looks radically different depending on which season of the year we fly it. It looks amazing in Summer, Autumn, and Winter, but a bit less vibrant in Spring when everything has died back during Winter and new growth hasn't started.

Billingford Mill, South Norfolk (By Kevin_Fairgrieve)

Parking is very limited at the mill but the nearby pub has plenty.. The mill is generally not open, so pick your day and go.

This windmill was built to replace a post mill that was blown over and destroyed in 1859. The new mill was run using wind power between 1860 and 1956. It was the last commercial windmill in Norfolk. It continued to work using an engine until 1959.

The mill has five storeys, a Norfolk boat-shaped cap, four patent sails and a six-bladed fantail which ensures the cap always faces into the wind. Most of the original machinery is intact, including two sets of stones, the great spur wheel, sack hoist, tentering gear and governors.

It was the first mill to be acquired by Norfolk County Council for preservation by Norfolk Windmills Trust in 1965. It is a Grade II* listed building. The mill was restored by the Suffolk Millwright, Tim Whiting and his team, between 2017 and 2021.

The mill stands on Billingford Common, a County Wildlife Site. Tours of the mill are available on open days and by appointment.

A fantastic and unique place steeped in history. So much of our heritage is sadly being left to just rot away.

Monk Bretton Priory, Barnsley (By bryand)

Monk Bretton Priory is an English Heritage site which has been excavated to show one of the most detailed floor plans of any such building. Access is straightforward with parking nearby and TAOL from a public lane alongside the site.

Bolton-upon-Dearne AA battery site, Barnsley (By bryand)

The site a 4-gun anti-aircraft battery from WW2 has survived in a field at Bolton-upon-Dearne, South Yorkshire. Most of the site is intact, and easily accessible, as it is next to Dearne Valley Wetlands SSSI.

Dunraven Bay, Vale of Glamorgan (By Victoria_Graholska)

Dunraven Bay (Southerndown Beach), is a scenic beach in South Wales featuring a sandy shore, rich fossil-hunting rock pools, and historic walled gardens.

It's a beautiful place to spend entire day there walking, enjoying the views, have a picnic and for any water activities.

Flying drone is a sheer joy as it reveals breathtaking views of the cliffs, which were formed in the various historic times and are so unique.

Walled gardens add a special character to the place.

There is a parking for which you will be asked to pay £5 in cash, ample parking further up the hills, toilets and accessible toilets were open and well maintained.

Snack Shop was closed so can't comment on that. It's about 20 minute walk towards Ogmore Beach where you will find nice place to eat called West Farm Southerndown Coastal Retreat.

Thoroughly enjoyed this location!

Ogmore-by-Sea, Vale of Glamorgan (By Victoria_Graholska)

Beautiful spot for flying and after a long research to make sure it's safe and legal I have decided to give it a go. There is so much more to see in this location including walking all the way up to the Ogmore Castle - and we went there before just without a drone and in another direction you will find a Dunraven Bay with a castle (or a footprint of the castle) I'm not too sure as we didn't get past the parking gate due to only cash accepted.
Parking is available and the earlier you arrive the better
