TSS Duke of Lancaster added to Coastal Scenery in Wales by kvetner on 14/02/2020

You can park for free at Abakhan Fabrics, where there is a cafe and public toilets. Footpaths run down to the shore on either side of a water channel, these are both public footpaths. Fly from the footpath or the shore (the east footpath leads to better clear space for take-off and landing).

Hazards: pedestrians using the paths, a railway line, and various overhead cables.

Hall Garth Park, Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire (By CutThroatJake)

Hall Garth Park in Hornsea is a large green space that offers locals and visitors a beautiful place to relax. Just a short walk from Hornsea's town centre, this well-maintained park features lush lawns, mature trees, and flower beds. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or picnic.

Lower Town, Fishguard, Pembrokeshire (By stubbyd)

Nestled along the rugged Pembrokeshire coastline, Lower Town Harbour offers a tranquil glimpse into Wales’ maritime past.

This charming tidal harbour is surrounded by colourful cottages [reminds me of Ballamory], fishing boats, and rolling green hills that meet the sea. At low tide, the boats rest gently on the mudflats, revealing the textures and tones and along with the wooded hills and the open bay then I think it offers a lot for photography enthusiasts be they land or air based.

Lower Town has free parking - I didn't check for how long but more than enough for a drone flight or two.

Ruperra Castle, Caerphilly (By pete-the-geek)

This is a stunning Grade 2 listed building. It is unfortunately privately owned and you are not permitted to TOAL nearby. It has been devastated by fire and is in a state of disrepair.

The whole surrounding area is managed by the Ruperra Conservation Trust. On the top of the hill to the North, is a historic Hill Fort and some more modern transformations are still visible via another short walk up the hill which makes for another great location to fly around

Parking is some distance away with a 1km walk to the TOAL site that I used, which is a track that is also a bridalway. It provides a couple of spots that give you good line of site but beware, the surrounding building are private residences so the residence may have objections to overflights. It is also an equestrian business so there are horses and riders frequenting the area.

Pen-y-Lan, Newport (By pete-the-geek)

This is a great area to fly for sunset views. It is possible to see from Cardiff to Newport and being elevated above the surrounding area it gives good views. In good weather, you can also see across the Severn Channel to England.

Be careful of the 2 wind turbines.

There are a couple of pull-ins where you can fly from and good views of the drone while flying.

As it is rural, it is possible to easily fly heavy drones there but as you have to take off on the road side, care must be taken to ensure adequate distance from the occasional vehicles.

Levens Hall, South Lakeland (By D0c.Col)

Levens Hall, is one of Cumbria’s most historic and beautifully preserved homes.

A visit will take you on a journey through more than 700 years of history — from its origins as a medieval pele tower, through its Elizabethan transformation, to the creation of its world-famous topiary gardens by Colonel James Grahme and designer Guillaume Beaumont in the 1690s.

There is a timeless atmosphere inside and out of the house that is still very much kept alive by the Bagot family, who have called it home for over two centuries.

Just a few miles along the A6 from the A590/A591 Junction roundabout it is well sign posted. I parked in the grounds for free but there is a charge for entering the grounds and hall itself.

I used the Hall's overflow carpark in the field west of the hall. There is an SSSi over the road that covers the Levens Deer Park but you're well clear of it over the house.

bidbury Mead Recreation Ground, Bedhampton, Havant (By macspite)

The car park has 40 spaces and a 6'6" height restriction. There is a brick built cricket club house with adjoining public toilets. Several benches, cricket and football pitches.

The views of the surrounding town, industry and coastline are worthwhile.

There is a continual background noise of traffic, mainly from the nearby dual carriageways but the distinctive sound of railway trains gives just enough warning to capture them as they use the busy rail line (London or Brighton to Portsmouth, Southampton and the West).

Shelford Mill, Newton, Rushcliffe (By Fuzzyjack)

The remains of an old flour/grain mill on the hill top in the Trent valley.

There is a small lay-by for parking just on the bend of the road and a gated footpath through the field the tower stands in. The information board shown above gives a short history of the mill and is located just by the gate and parking.

Stoke Bardolph Weir, Rushcliffe (By Fuzzyjack)

Just on the edge of what is currently the FRZ for Nottingham (Tollerton) Airport, this is a long weir with several small steps on the River Trent.

It’s a walk from anywhere you can park at the top of the cliffs in Radcliffe on Trent down to the nature reserve (ponds). Launch from the edge of the river and you can get a good view of the weir. The FRZ starts about mid river so you can’t currently go all the way over without requesting permission. Tollerton has stopped operating fixed wing air craft while it waits to be redeveloped so no flights are expected and it isn’t clear who to contact but the zone is listed as a FRZ.

Sadly the locks are well in the zone so I haven’t flown there yet.

Pentre Ifan Chambered Tomb, Pembrokeshire (By stubbyd)

Aerial shot of the Pentre Ifan Chambered Tomb near Fishguard. Whilst it is under the care of CADW [see CADW.gov for details], they are open to imagery for 'personal use' but don't allow take off and landing from their land.

That's not an issue here, as the road is approx 150m, and the footpath leading to it is probably not their land either! Parking is limited to about half a dozen vehicles in a layby and the footpath is directly off of one end of this,

Greystoke Castle, Eden (By D0c.Col)

Greystoke Castle is a historic Cumbrian fortress dating back to 1069, once home to the Greystoke and Howard families. After centuries of battles, fire, and wartime damage, the castle is now being revived by Tom Nash, who is restoring its interiors and opening it to the public for tours, events, and community life.

The entrance to the castle estate is in the centre of Greystoke Village. Parking is directly in front of the castle. The Castle has a small cafe and toilets. At the time of my visit it had just opened and the owner was happy to let me film there.
